Woven Organic vs 6-Pad Ceramic — Why Woven is Better for Utility Tractors

Some kits come with a 6-pad ceramic clutch disc. Ceramic discs are designed for high-horsepower, heavy-draft applications where the clutch is engaged and stays engaged — plowing deep soil, pulling discs at full throttle. For utility tractor work — loader operations, mowing, hay work, grading — a ceramic disc is the wrong choice. Ceramic discs engage aggressively with minimal modulation, making precise, slow maneuvers jerky and difficult. Installation Notes

Splitting the tractor is required — you must separate the engine/clutch housing from the transmission
Support the front (engine) half and rear (transmission) half securely on jack stands or a split stand before separating
Disconnect the driveline, hydraulic lines, wiring harness, and any controls that cross the split point
Remove the bolts joining the clutch housing to the transmission housing
Carefully roll the rear half straight back — keep the halves aligned to avoid bending the input shaft
Remove the old pressure plate bolts in a star pattern, evenly loosening to release spring tension
Remove the old pressure plate and clutch disc — note the disc orientation (usually stamped "Flywheel Side")
Inspect the flywheel surface — if scored, glazed, or heat-checked, resurface or replace before installing new components
Check the flywheel step measurement — should be 0.820" for this kit
Replace the pilot bearing in the flywheel — press or tap out the old one, press in the new one
Install the new clutch disc using a clutch alignment tool — "Flywheel Side" faces the flywheel
Install the new pressure plate — torque bolts in a star pattern to spec (typically 25-30 ft-lbs, verify in service manual)
Install the new release bearing on the throw-out bearing carrier
Roll the rear half back together — align the input shaft splines with the clutch disc hub carefully
Reinstall all housing bolts, connections, and controls
Adjust the clutch free play per your service manual (typically 1" to 1-1/2" of pedal free play)

What is the difference between woven organic and ceramic clutch discs?

Ceramic (6-pad) discs engage aggressively with very little modulation — designed for heavy draft work at sustained full throttle. For most 1020/2030/2440/2630/2640 owners, woven organic is the correct and preferred choice. Ceramic discs make precise, slow maneuvers jerky and difficult.

How do I know if my tractor has Independent PTO or Live PTO?
Independent PTO (IPTO) has its own clutch — the PTO continues to run when you depress the main clutch pedal. If your PTO stops when you press the clutch pedal, you have a non-independent (transmission-driven) PTO. This kit is for tractors with Independent PTO. Contact us with your serial number if you're unsure.

Should I resurface the flywheel?
Inspect the flywheel surface carefully. If it has deep scoring, heat spots (blue discoloration), or cracks, it should be resurfaced or replaced. Light glazing can be removed with emery cloth. A damaged flywheel surface will cause the new clutch to chatter, slip, or wear prematurely. Verify the flywheel step measures 0.820" — if it's out of spec, the pressure plate will not clamp correctly.
