Protect your NexStar proportional valves. This is the return line hydraulic filter element for Auto Crane EH-Series cranes — the filtration barrier between your crane's hydraulic fluid and the $4,000+ proportional valve bank. When this $69 filter clogs or bypasses, contaminated fluid flows directly through your precision valves, scoring the spools and destroying the valve bodies. Auto Crane part number 320991910. In stock, ships same day.
NexStar EH-Series cranes use proportional solenoid valves — precision hydraulic components with tight internal tolerances. These valves provide the smooth, variable-speed control that makes the NexStar system superior to conventional on/off crane controls. The trade-off: proportional valves are extremely sensitive to contamination.
Every particle of dirt, metal, or debris in the hydraulic fluid is an abrasive working against the valve spools, orifices, and seats. The return line filter catches this contamination before it recirculates through the system. When the filter element clogs:
Hydraulic filters are invisible maintenance. Nobody thinks about them until something goes wrong. The filter element sits inside the reservoir housing — out of sight, out of mind. Many crane operators run the same filter for years because "the crane works fine." By the time the crane starts acting up — sluggish movements, erratic proportional control, jerky boom operation — the damage to the proportional valves has already been done.
Then the owner calls the Auto Crane dealer for a filter element. The dealer wants $99–$105 for a filter that should cost a fraction of that. And they'll happily sell you a new proportional valve bank for $4,000+ when the old valves are destroyed by contamination because the filter wasn't changed.
Same specification 10-micron return line filter element at $69 — 30%+ less than the dealer. Change it every 500 hours or annually (whichever comes first), and your proportional valves will last the life of the crane. Skip it, and you're buying valve banks.
This filter element fits the following Auto Crane models with proportional hydraulic (EH) systems:
⚠️ This is specifically for the EH (Electro-Hydraulic / NexStar) series with proportional valve control. If your crane is a non-EH model (standard on/off valve system), verify the filter part number in your service manual — the reservoir and filter configuration may differ.
10 micron is the standard filtration rating for return line hydraulic filters in crane applications. It captures particles larger than 10 microns — which includes the silt, metal wear particles, and seal debris that damage proportional valve components. Finer filtration (5 or 3 micron) would plug too quickly in a return line application. Coarser filtration (25 micron) would allow damaging particles to pass through.
Cellulose (paper) media is the factory-standard filter media for this application. It provides excellent particle capture at a reasonable cost and is appropriate for standard change intervals (500 hours). Synthetic media elements are available for extended-life applications but are not required for standard service.
How do I know when the filter needs changing if there's no indicator?
Track it by hours or calendar time. Put a sticker on the reservoir with the date and hour meter reading each time you change it. If you don't track hours, change it annually at minimum. For active cranes (daily use), 500 hours comes up 2–3 times per year. If in doubt, change it — a $69 filter is the cheapest insurance on the truck.
Can I clean and reuse the old filter element?
No. Cellulose (paper) media filter elements are not washable or reusable. Attempting to clean them with compressed air or solvents damages the media fibers and opens up channels that allow contamination to pass through. Once the element has captured its rated capacity of particles, it must be replaced with a new element.
What happens if I never change the filter?
The element clogs progressively. Flow restriction increases, causing slower crane functions and elevated fluid temperature. Eventually, the pressure differential across the element exceeds the bypass valve spring force, and the bypass opens — allowing unfiltered oil to circulate freely through the entire hydraulic system. At this point, every contaminant in the reservoir is flowing through your proportional valves, pump, and cylinders. Valve damage follows within weeks to months.
Should I change the hydraulic fluid at the same time?
It depends on fluid condition. Pull a sample — if it's clear amber, the fluid is fine. If it's dark, cloudy, or smells burnt, change the fluid along with the filter. As a rule, hydraulic fluid should be changed every 2,000–3,000 hours or when oil analysis indicates degradation. Always install a fresh filter element after a fluid change.
