Your Vermeer SC252 jackshaft bearing has failed — the cutter wheel is vibrating, the bearing is screaming, or it's seized completely and melted the belt. The jackshaft carries the cutter wheel drive belt load all day long, every day. When one bearing goes, the belt tension instantly overloads the other bearing. If you only replace the one that failed, the other one will follow within hours — maybe days if you're lucky.
Do it right: replace them in pairs. This is a complete matched pair of heavy-duty 1-1/4" pillow block bearings for the Vermeer SC252 jackshaft. Both bearings ship together for $130. Replace both, re-tension the belt, and get back to grinding.
The jackshaft sits between the engine and the cutter wheel, transferring power through the drive belt. Both bearings are under constant radial load from belt tension — they wear together. When one bearing fails:
Replacing one bearing means you're pulling the machine apart again next week. Replacing both means the job is done right the first time.
Vermeer SC252 stump cutters use two different bearing housing sizes depending on the production revision. Measure your bolt spacing before ordering:
How to measure: With the old bearing removed (or still mounted), measure the distance between the center of the two mounting bolt holes. If it's 5 inches, this is the correct bearing. If it's closer to 4-3/4 inches, you need the smaller 206 series.
The 142464001 jackshaft bearing pair fits the following:
⚠️ Verify your mounting bolt spacing (5.0" center-to-center) before ordering. Some SC252 machines use the narrower 206 Series housing (4.75" bolt spacing). Contact us with your machine serial number if you're unsure which housing size your machine uses.
Stump grinders produce massive amounts of wood chips, fine dust, and grit. Standard single-seal bearings let this debris work past the seal and into the bearing races, grinding down the balls and raceways from the inside. These bearings use double lip contact seals — two overlapping seal lips that create a labyrinth barrier against contamination. The result is significantly longer bearing life in the abrasive environment of stump grinding, even without external grease fittings.
Why do you sell these in pairs instead of individually?
Because it's the right way to do it. Jackshaft bearings wear together under constant belt tension. When one fails, the other is already on borrowed time. Selling them individually would mean more customers calling back in a week to order the second one — with their machine torn apart again. A matched pair means one job, one downtime, done right.
Do I need to re-grease these?
These bearings come pre-packed with grease from the factory and are sealed with double lip contact seals. Under normal stump grinder operation, the factory grease is sufficient for the bearing's service life. There are no external grease fittings — the sealed design keeps contaminants out and grease in.
How do I know if I have the 206 or 207 Series bearing?
Measure the bolt spacing on your machine's bearing pedestals. If the two mounting bolt holes are 5.0 inches apart (center-to-center), you have the 207 Series — this listing is correct. If they're 4.75 inches apart, you have the 206 Series and need a different bearing. You can also measure the bearing housing width — the 207 is visually wider than the 206.
My jackshaft has a groove worn into it — will new bearings fix the problem?
If the shaft is grooved, scored, or has a reduced diameter where the bearings sit, new bearings will have a loose fit and fail prematurely. You may need to have the shaft machined or sleeved, or replace the jackshaft entirely. Inspect the shaft carefully before installing new bearings — if you can feel a step or groove with your fingernail, the shaft needs attention.
