Your broom's rear brakes are dragging, squealing, or barely stopping the machine. The shoes are worn down to rivets, the drum is scored, and you can feel the pedal going to the floor. The broom dealer wants $130–$199 for a set of brake shoes — for a standard 11-inch drum brake. That's an outrageous price for brake shoes that you can get anywhere.
We sell the complete rear brake shoe set for $89 — all 4 shoes for one axle. Same specification, same 11" x 2-1/4" dimensions, same fitment. Replaces Broce part number 4414A and Superior part number 01-50001-005.
Broce and Superior brooms use crate axles (Ford 9" and Dana-based industrial axles) for their rear drive assembly. These axles use a standard 11" x 2-1/4" drum brake setup — the same proven brake design used across millions of vehicles and industrial applications. The brake shoes are a standard industrial fitment that bolts directly into the drum assembly on your broom's rear axle. No modification, no machining, no adapters.
This brake shoe set fits the following broom / sweeper models:
⚠️ These brooms use standard crate axles with 11" x 2-1/4" drum brakes. Verify your drum diameter and shoe width before ordering. If your broom has been retrofitted with a non-standard axle, measure the drum and shoe dimensions to confirm fitment. Contact us with your machine model and serial number if you need confirmation.
Why does a broom use the same brakes as a truck?
Broce and Superior brooms are built on heavy-duty crate axles — factory-assembled rear axle assemblies with standard automotive/industrial drum brakes. This is common in the construction equipment industry. The axle and brake assembly is a proven, off-the-shelf component that provides reliable braking for the broom's weight class.
Should I replace the drums too?
Inspect the drums when you pull them off. If the braking surface is smooth with only minor wear marks, the drums are fine — just install the new shoes. If the drums are scored (grooves you can catch your fingernail in) or out-of-round (you'll feel pulsation under braking), they need to be resurfaced or replaced. Most auto parts stores can resurface drums for $15–$20 each.
Do I need to replace the hardware (springs, adjusters)?
Hardware kits are cheap insurance. The return springs lose tension over time, and weak springs cause the shoes to drag on the drums — leading to overheating and premature wear. If your springs look stretched, discolored (heat damage), or rusty, replace the hardware kit. Contact us if you need the hardware kit for your axle.
Should I replace both sides at the same time?
Yes, always. Brake shoes should be replaced as a complete axle set (all 4 shoes). Replacing only one side will cause uneven braking — the machine will pull toward the side with the new shoes. This set includes all 4 shoes for one complete axle.
